APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSES

Our courses fully cover the information and instruction necessary to pass the examinations to become an Approved Driving Instructor.

A great deal of personal effort and private study is required to meet the high standards set by the Driving Standards Agency. Potential students will be required to attend a half day pre-course assessment. This assessment comprises an interview, an assessment drive and a test of knowledge in the form of multiple choice questions on driving theory. From the results of these tests, we will be in a position to advise on the suitability of a candidate for training as a Professional Driving Instructor.

We would stress that it is unwise for anyone to contemplate becoming an Approved Driving Instructor until they have read ADI 14, 'Your road to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor' which is a Driving Standards Agency publication and forms part of the Driving Standards Agency's ADI Starter Pack. Steerwell Driving Tuition carry stocks of ADI 14, or it can be obtained from the Driving Standards Agency, Stanley House, 56 Talbot Street, Nottingham NG1 5GU price £11.00.

The ADI Examination
To become a registered Approved Driving Instructor with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) you must pass a three part qualifying examination, which must be passed within 2 years after passing the Part 1 stage.

Part 1 - Theory Test
This consists of a multiple choice section of theory knowledge and a video based hazard perception section. Both of these tests are taken at the same sitting.

Multiple Choice Questions
This test is of 90 minutes duration and comprises 100 multiple choice questions using touch-screen computers. The questions are split into four bands:
1.Road Procedure
2.Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge
3.Driving test, disabilities, law
4.Publications, instructional techniques

The overall pass mark is 85%: but you must achieve at least 80% in each of the four bands.

Hazard Perception
This test consists of 14 video clips each containing one or more developing hazards. You are required to click the mouse button when you see a hazard developing that may result in you, as a driver, having to take some action. The earlier you respond, the higher your score. There are 15 scoreable hazards each carrying a maximum of 5 marks. You must score an aggregate of at least 57 marks out of the maximum 75 in order to pass this test.

Both the Multiple choice and Hazard Perception parts must be passed at the same sitting. If one or both tests are failed, both tests must be retaken.

There are no restrictions on the number of attempts allowed for the Theory Test.

Part 2 - Driving Ability
This test is in two parts and examines your ability to drive to a very high standard.

Eyesight Test
You must be able to read a vehicle registration mark, with glasses of contact lenses if you normally wear them:
from a distance of 26.5m (figures and letters 79mm high and 50mm wide)
from a distance of 27.5m (figures and letters 79mm high and 57mm wide)

Test of Driving Technique
This test is far more difficult than the 'L' test, and a very high standard is required.
At the start of the test you will be asked two 'Show me/Tell me' questions relating to basic vehicle
safety/maintenance. During the test you must demonstrate your ability to drive to a high standard of competence, including the principles of 'eco-friendly driving'.

To pass this test, you must not commit more than 6 driving faults. 7 or more driving faults, or one or more serious or dangerous faults will result in a fail.

It is important to note that you are only allowed three attempts at this test.

Part 3 - Ability to Instruct
The object of this test is to measure your ability to give quality instruction, and pass knowledge on to pupils.

The test is in two parts, each lasting half an hour. For both parts the examiner will play the role of a pupil:

In the first part, a novice or partly trained pupil
In the second part, a pupil who is about test standard, or a qualified driver undertaking driver development training.

You will be assessed on your method, accuracy and clarity of instruction.

It is important to note that you are only allowed three attempts at this test.

Instructor Training

Training
Training is mostly carried out on a part time basis, to fit around your existing job and commitments.
No formal qualifications are needed to train as an Approved Driving Instructor, but you must:

  • hold a full UK or EU/EAA unrestricted car driving licence
  • have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the ADI Register after qualifying
  • not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to being entered in the Register
  • be a fit and proper person to have your name entered in the Register. All convictions still in force, motoring and non-motoring are taken into account when assessing the suitability of a candidate

Parts 2 and 3 of the qualifying examination must be passed withing 2 years of passing Part 1.

All training is on a one-to-one basis.

Part 1
Training is mainly carried out in the form of self-study. Classroom sessions are used to monitor performance and give 'coaching' on both the Theory and Hazard Perception Test elements, including mock tests.

Part 2
Training for this test runs concurrently with the Part 1 training and comprises "in car" training sessions, where your driving is assessed and feedback given on the specific areas that need attention. These areas can then be worked on between training sessions, and a mock test is given when you are at the required standard.

Part 3
The Part 3 syllabus is covered using "in-car" training sessions and classroom sessions, including mock tests when you are at the required standard.

Course Duration
Due to the large amount of home study and personal effort required, the time taken to complete all 3 examinations will vary with each individual.

Our courses are flexible and can be taken to suit your requirements. We cater for any combination of the 3 qualifying exams, and also for those needing help with the ADI "Check Test".

Training sessions can be taken as 2 hourly sessions, half day or full day sessions, to suit individual requirements.
